On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
